The horizontal tube contains a rotating arm with a quadrant on the end that connects to the rudder quadrant. This means there are no control lines across the cockpit

The control lines are used to rotate the vane to set the angle to the wind. This allows you to sit forward in the cockpit and make small adjustments to the sailing angle
