Everywhere we went in Burma in 2002 the temples and pagodas were under restoration.   

What wasn't being coated with gold leaf was being painted.   Shwedagon must be like the Forth Bridge, by the time they get around, it's  time to start again.

When we returned in 2005 a much more extensive renovation was taking place and the magnificent Golden Zedi reputedly with more gold than the Bank of England was covered with bamboo scaffolding,

 

 

All the way to the  tiered hti which is encrusted with 1100 diamonds totaling 278 carats and 1383 other precious stones. at the very top is the diamond orb, 4351 diamonds weighing 1800 carats  surmounted by a single 78 carat diamond.
Workmen dotted around the  octagonal terraces which rise from a square base to the spherical dome.
