There were relatively few tourists but many devout Buddhists hoping to gain merit for the next life, chanting , meditating, bathing images with water

 

and telling beads.

Talking to visitors is a favourite pastime for monks everywhere in Myanmar.  

Idly wondering how many monks there are in the whole country we decided to look it up in the Lonely Planet.  

Curious? 

In June 2001 "there were 466,524 monks residing in 53,017 Monasteries"
