079 Xian.jpg (39091 bytes) Xian is one of the few cities in China where the city walls remain.  Although a lot  has been restored it isn't possible to walk around the city via the walls
Once the largest city in the world, Xian served as the capital of China for 1000 years. It is now the capital of Shaanxi Province, a large industrial city of wide boulevards, teeming traffic and a permanent haze of pollution. 093 Xian.jpg (39313 bytes)

Market stalls in the old Muslim quarter.

More than 60,000 Hui Muslims live in Xian.  The winding street markets are a great place to pick up inexpensive souvenirs and gifts.  Bargaining is the order of the day.

An itinerant tailor calls to women in the apartment windows above the street.  They throw down clothing for him to repair. He returns it the same way it came. 096 Xian.jpg (39548 bytes)
