Ubud 155.jpg (18777 bytes) The 'Kulit' is made of cured buffalo hide, pierced to a filigree finish,painted and attached to a wooden stick.

The repertoire is derived from the Javanese legends of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

Wayang Kulit

The Dalang  or puppet master during  a performance,  his  coconut oil lamp is lit and the  puppets  not in use are stuck into a banana palm awaiting their 'entrance'.

Ubud 154.jpg (39447 bytes) Do go behind the screen and watch the dalang at work.   As well as manipulating the puppets he is the narrator, the voices of all the characters and the conductor of the orchestra.  There are no written scripts, the dialogue being improvised in performance.
A group of monkeys in the Monkey Forest.  The youngest here being only a couple of weeks old.  They have a reputation for being aggressive but we were there when they were being fed and they were no problem. Ubud 190.jpg (39679 bytes)
