Feeling we had little choice in the circumstances we looked for  a day long bus tour. Miraculously someone spoke English and she offered us a Chinese language bus tour with her along as our English speaking guide.  She lasted an hour then passed us on to someone with a 'little English'.  By lunch time she too had taken off and left us to the tender mercies of the  Chinese language guide aka Megaphone Minnie. Who had just enough English to drag us back as we tried to wander away from the group.

The gardens are lovely but we were disappointed with the weather and the tour.

Even in the awful teeming rain the streets and courtyards were busy with noisy tour groups

I love this, you can see the rain coming down in a waterfall from the eves.

He looked the way we felt and we were happy to board our train for Shanghai and a lovely Italian dinner with good wine in a small restaurant in a decommissioned streetcar on Nanjing Lu.

Our day rescued by a delightful waiter and good food.
