Not surprisingly being a hill station the town is  substantially cooler than the rest of the Mandalay region and warrants a thriving sweater knitting industry.

The late Mr. Atche taken from a photograph in his former store where he made eye glasses and repaired watches.  He was very kind and hospitable to us in 2002 and I was looking forward to seeing him again in 2005 but he had passed away the previous year.

The Atche family have been responsible for the maintenance of the clock in the Purcell Tower since it's installation.

The business is now in the capable hands of his nephews.  Mr. Benny Atche on the left is just as hospitable as his Uncle and enjoys meeting visitors.   Especially those from Canada where his mother, sisters and brother live.   

I should have asked Benny which of the clock stories is more likely to me true.
