170alijiang.JPG (35454 bytes) Chairman Mao towering over the square which bears his name in the new town.  Before we leave we pose with him for a farewell photo.   On our first evening in Lijiang we stood here at dusk watching local girls in colourful costumes dancing around and around Mao's statue.  It seemed a strange way for beautiful young women to spend a Saturday night.
It's easy to see why Naxi women retain their sheepskin capes.  The basket is full and she is preparing to heave it onto her back. 218 Lijiang.jpg (42317 bytes)

Tiger Leaping Gorge

Not a favourite place, the dust from the blasting of a road on the other side of the gorge along with the thousands of May Day vacationers and a heavy shower didn't make for a very happy visit.  When the new road opens it can only get busier.  The days of the challenging trek to Walnut Grove are over for ever.
