View   from the balcony towards Mount Batur.  Although it looks dormant, wisps of steam remind you it is still an active volcano which has erupted several times this century.  The black areas on its slopes are not shadows but lava flows. Kintamani 070.jpg (39648 bytes)

The people of Kintamani used to live by lake Batur but following eruptions  in 1917 and 1926 they moved to the high cliffs overlooking Batur.
