Karaweik Barge

Named for the bird on it's prow.

For two weeks during the "Festival of Lights" in late September early October this  recreated royal ceremonial barge is used to transport 4 of the 5 most holy Buddha images of the Phaubg Daw U Kyaung around the lake.  The 5th image has not left the pagoda since it's miraculous return following it's loss in the lake during a storm in 1965. 

This is also the time of the leg rowing competitions.   the   A sight to behold if I can bring myself to visit in the rainy season.

These images were brought to Myanmar in the 12th century and languished in a cave for centuries.  They have been displayed and venerated at Phaung Daw U since their rediscovery.  Now they are so heavily gilded that they are unrecognizable.
