Whilst cycling around Naungshwe we saw many small self sufficient sugar growing and refining operations.  Nothing was wasted, even the outer leaves were used to fuel the fires in the 'refinery'.  We noticed that most of the cane cutters and field workers were women.

While the women are in the fields the men are in charge of the heavy machinery

And the boiling vats of cane sugar.  

 

It certainly doesn't look very appetizing yet

After the refining process the final product is laid out in the sun.
