This incongruous site is a long abandoned whale oil processing plant. In fact it was burned down over 30 years ago.

The best place to anchor is in the cove on the west side of Hawke Harbour where these two whale oil hulks are lying. hawke hbr 2.jpg (39906 bytes)
BateauHbr 1.jpg (39667 bytes) Bateau Harbour is another abandoned community. There is a good wharf and good anchorage at the head of the harbour.

Unlike many such places, Bateau Harbour is visited frequently by the former residents and the wharf had been repaired.

I arrived in Bateau Harbour to find a "homecoming" week in progress. There was smoke coming out of many of the chimneys and you could have been fooled into thinking the place was still a living community. BateauHbr 2.jpg (39758 bytes)
