In February 1963 following the Eka Dasu Rudra sacrifice which takes place every 100 years, Gunung Agung erupted killing over a thousand people and  destroying most of the islands crops with its volcanic ash.
As there is insufficient rain to water the paddies agricultural co-operatives divide the water fairly amongst their members.  A Canal system made of bamboo pipes, as shown here, feed  all the paddies. Besakih 085.jpg (39573 bytes)
