Originally constructed in 1565 to house the Emerald Buddha which had been acquired from Siam under complicated circumstances. In 1778 the Siamese sacked Vientiane, destroyed the temple and carried their Emerald Buddha back to Bangkok where you can see, but definitely not photograph it in the similarly named Wat Phra Keo in the grounds of the Royal Palace. This temple was rebuilt in the 1930's and is now a museum. |

Beautiful bronze Buddha statues line the outer corridor.. When Buddha
became enlightened he touched the earth. This elegant hand
gesture is 'calling the earth to witness'. |
