Gateway to the fortified city of Angkor Thom: The Great City
Center of the
Khmer Kingdom, more splendid than any European city of it's
day. Only the religious monuments remain as testament to the
magnificence of the last Khmer capital.
The
three headed albino elephant Aravana, the mount of Indra the god of
thunder, lightning and war graces the inner corners where the
gateway meets the walls.
His
trunks tugging at lotus flowers form the pillars.
At
the center of Angkor Thom is the incredible Bayon.
Its moats
and walls housed the royal palace and homes of the royal family, military generals
and priests.
From a
distance its remaining towers and approximately 200 giant heads
appear to be little more than an impressive pile of stone.
Up close it is
magnificent
The
enigmatic, serene and smiling faces of The Bayon.
