Punakha Dzong (Palace of Great Happiness)  lies at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and the Oho Chhu in one of Bhutans most temperate valleys.  Crops grow year round, many Bhutanese winter here and it was the official winter capital until 1955.

The Dzong is entered via this bridge

The history of Punakha Dzong is a catalogue of disaster and damage from many fires, floods and earthquakes.  A major renovation followed the floods of 1994.  It took 12 years to complete but the Dzong is beautifully restored.
