Luang Prabang 

UNESCO World Heritage site .

A wonderful blend of old Lao wooden houses with traces  of the influence on the architecture of the former French colony of Indochine.

 

UNESCO is replacing all the narrow old streets with new illuminated brick pathways and a drainage system.  We also saw signs of a recycling programme which augers well for the future.

 

 

Pretty streets like this run from the main street to the river and  are lined with clean and inexpensive guesthouses, many  are very ordinary but some quite charming.  They get busy, so in high season it makes sense to arrive as early in the day as possible.

Steps down to the river

Confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan.

The old heart of the city occupies a peninsula bounded by the two rivers.
