Since I first saw Angkor Wat in 2005, I knew I wanted to return.  I wanted to be here at the end of the rainy season in the hope I would be blessed with a spectacular dawn.

Once again it eluded me but then I was quite a bit later in the year than I originally intended.

The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly meeting this monk

All in all it was a disappointing return.   The Wat was over run with people.   There was a huge amount of restoration going on with scaffolding and tarps covering large areas.

I had previously climbed to the upper levels but this was not possible in 2007.   Carpenters were busy covering the badly eroded stairs with wooden ones which look just as intimidating as the originals.  As I write this in 2009, I think it is once again possible to climb the stairs.

Hopefully they will work out how to accommodate visitors without compromising the buildings further.   For sure we can no longer be allowed unrestricted access to the worlds treasures,  The Potala, The Great Wall of China, The Temples of Bagan we are having too detrimental an effect on them.

Just as I was deciding now (November 2007) was not the time to visit Angkor Wat, everything change.
