Bouddhanath

Tibetan Buddhists circumnabulating the stupa.

I can't remember when I saw my first picture of Bouddhanath but I had wanted to visit ever since.  Our trip to Bhutan gave me the perfect opportunity to  visit Kathmandu.

For lovers of trivia:  Bouddhanath is also known as Khasti, or dew drops, as builders are said to have used dew to mix the mortar because of a  severe drought during construction.

Next day Barbara and Raine made a flying visit to Varanasi and I went to Bangkok to try to get a business visa to enable me to volunteer at a school in Myanmar.

Postcards for sale all over Thamel show Bouddhanath beautifully illuminated at night so we went to see.  Unfortunately that only happens on high days and holidays.  The moral of this story is buy a guide book or at least check out the Web before leaving home.  Or ask Uttam.
It took me a long time to get here but it was well worth it.
